The question that follows immediately in any real organisation is narrower and more personal: does this apply to us, and if so, to which part of us. Most organisations answer this badly, either concluding they are out of scope because no single team carries the obvious legal duty, or assuming a passport obligation has already arrived because a product category was mentioned in a policy document. This module prevents both failures. It separates participation in the value chain from legal accountability, gives a disciplined way to read a scope claim, and closes with the practical consequence that trips up most programmes once the paperwork is settled: the data your organisation needs but does not hold. **Estimated completion time: 40 minutes.** Four lessons of 8 minutes each, plus a ten question assessment of about 8 minutes. ## Learning Objectives #### Module learning objectives Every objective is tested. Each assessment question is tagged to one of the five. ## Lesson Sequence Then take the [module assessment](/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/assessment). ## Canonical Reading This module teaches from three canonical articles, each free and open to everyone: * [Who Needs a Digital Product Passport?](/docs/knowledge-base/digital-product-passports/who-needs-a-digital-product-passport) * [Who Is Legally Responsible for a Digital Product Passport?](/docs/knowledge-base/regulations/who-is-legally-responsible-for-a-digital-product-passport) * [Which Products Will Require a Digital Product Passport?](/docs/knowledge-base/regulations/which-products-will-require-a-digital-product-passport) The lessons add sequence, framing, examples and practice. They do not restate the regulatory content, and they never introduce a date, article number or citation that is not in the source articles. ## Framework Used **TBF-002, The Digital Product Passport Responsibility Model.** Introduced in Lesson 1. Maps the six groups in a product value chain to what each contributes to a passport. **TBF-007, The Product Category Rollout Model.** Introduced in Lesson 3. Places a product category on a four stage maturity scale so its scope status can be read from evidence rather than guessed. Full descriptions in the [framework registry](/docs/knowledge-base/frameworks/overview). ## The Running Case Product The Aurelia S2 cordless hedge trimmer continues from Module 1: a mid-price consumer power tool with a removable lithium-ion battery pack, a moulded polymer housing and a woven textile shoulder strap, contract manufactured in Vietnam and imported into the EU by the brand owner's Dutch entity. This module also introduces a short contrast vignette to show that value chain roles look different outside a single vertically aligned brand. ## Completion The module is complete when all four lessons are marked complete and the assessment is passed at the Foundations pass mark of 80 percent. Retakes are unlimited and your best score is kept. Progress is saved on this device. ## Next Step After the assessment, [Module 3: What a Passport Has to Contain](/docs/academy/foundations/module-3) moves from whether a passport applies to you towards what it must actually say once it does. ## Related Docs * [Lesson 1: Where You Sit in the Value Chain](/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/lesson-1) * [Module 2 assessment](/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/assessment) * [Module 1: What a Digital Product Passport Actually Is](/docs/academy/foundations/module-1) * [DPP Foundations](/docs/academy/foundations) * [Who Needs a Digital Product Passport?](/docs/knowledge-base/digital-product-passports/who-needs-a-digital-product-passport) > The second module of the free tieback Academy DPP Foundations path: value chain roles, who carries which legal duty, how to read scope without guessing, and the data you do not hold. ## Docs - [Lesson 1: Where You Sit in the Value Chain](https://tieback.io/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/lesson-1.md): Academy Foundations Module 2 Lesson 1: the Digital Product Passport Responsibility Model, the six groups it names, and how to place your own organisation among them. - [Lesson 2: Who Carries Which Duty](https://tieback.io/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/lesson-2.md): Academy Foundations Module 2 Lesson 2: how legal responsibility for a Digital Product Passport is allocated between manufacturers, importers, distributors and authorised representatives, and why participation is not the same as accountability. - [Lesson 3: Reading Scope Without Guessing](https://tieback.io/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/lesson-3.md): Academy Foundations Module 2 Lesson 3: the Product Category Rollout Model, how to tell an adopted obligation from a stated priority, and which products are likely to fall into early scope. - [Lesson 4: The Data You Do Not Hold](https://tieback.io/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/lesson-4.md): Academy Foundations Module 2 Lesson 4: naming the attributes your organisation cannot supply itself and locating the party in the value chain who actually holds them. - [Module 2 Assessment](https://tieback.io/docs/academy/foundations/module-2/assessment.md): Academy Foundations Module 2 summative assessment: ten scenario-weighted items covering value chain roles, legal duty allocation, reading scope status and locating data you do not hold.
