# Digital Product Passports

> A chapter introduction to Digital Product Passports: what they are, why they exist, and the reading order to follow in this section.

## Introduction

A [Digital Product Passport](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/digital-product-passport) (DPP) is a
structured, machine readable record of a product that is linked to the physical item through a
[data carrier](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/data-carrier) such as a QR code. It carries identity,
material, durability, repairability and compliance information, and it makes that information
available to the people and systems entitled to see it, from consumers to recyclers to
[market surveillance](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/market-surveillance) authorities.

This section is the foundation of tieback Knowledge. It explains the passport as a concept before
the later sections examine the law that mandates it, the standards that carry it, and the work
involved in delivering one.

## Why This Section Matters

The passport is not a document format. It is a legal instrument defined by Regulation (EU)
2024/1781 ([ESPR](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/espr)) and by the product specific rules that follow
it, and it changes what a manufacturer is expected to know about its own products. Teams that treat
it as a labelling exercise usually discover late that the underlying
[product data](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/product-data) does not exist, is not verifiable, or is
owned by a supplier who has never been asked for it.

Understanding the passport properly, before selecting tooling or committing to a schema, is the
single most effective way to avoid rework.

## What You Will Learn

* What a Digital Product Passport is in legal terms, and what it is not.
* Which data a passport is expected to carry, and how much of that detail is still pending in
  [delegated acts](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/delegated-act).
* How a passport is reached in practice through a
[product identifier](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/product-identifier) and a data carrier.
* Who is responsible for creating, hosting and maintaining the record over a
  [product lifecycle](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/product-lifecycle), and which
[economic operator](/docs/knowledge-base/glossary/economic-operator) carries the legal duty.
* How passport obligations differ across product groups and regulatory regimes.
