GTIN
Definition
The Global Trade Item Number is a GS1 identification key that uniquely identifies a trade item, a product or service configuration that may be priced, ordered or invoiced at any point in a supply chain. It identifies the item type, not the individual physical unit.
Expanded Explanation
A GTIN is issued from a GS1 Company Prefix licensed to a brand owner, which is what makes it globally unambiguous rather than merely unique inside one company’s systems. It exists in four lengths, GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13 and GTIN-14, which are the same key represented at different capacities, commonly used for small packs, North American retail, general retail and higher packaging levels respectively. Systems normally store the key right-aligned in a fourteen-digit field so the lengths can be compared reliably.
The scope of a GTIN is a distinct trade item. A different size, colour, formulation, pack count or material change is a different trade item and takes a different GTIN. Conversely, every unit of the same trade item shares one GTIN, which is why a GTIN alone cannot distinguish two boxes on the same pallet.
Instance-level identity comes from combining the GTIN with additional data. A GTIN plus a batch or lot number identifies a production run; a GTIN plus a serial number identifies a single physical item. Those combinations, not the GTIN by itself, are what serialised traceability and item-level passports depend on.
A GTIN is carried, not displayed for its own sake. It can be encoded in a linear barcode, a QR code, a DataMatrix or an RFID tag, the data carrier is the delivery mechanism and the GTIN is the payload. When the payload is expressed as a structured web address under GS1 Digital Link, the same key becomes resolvable, so a scan can be routed to product information, instructions or a passport endpoint.
In event data the GTIN answers “what”. An EPCIS event records that something happened to a specified object at a time and place; the object is identified using GS1 keys, typically a GTIN with batch or serial qualification.
Why It Matters
Most product data problems that surface late in a passport programme are identity problems that were present all along. If the same trade item carries different keys in different systems, or one key is reused across variants, then linking evidence, events and published information to the right product becomes guesswork. A correctly assigned GTIN gives the whole chain one agreed answer to “which product is this”.
Relationship to Digital Product Passports
Where a Digital Product Passport is required, it must be linked to the product through a persistent identifier and made accessible via a data carrier. A GTIN, particularly when combined with batch or serial data and expressed as a Digital Link URI, is a well-established way to satisfy that need and is widely assumed in industry practice. It is a practical option, not an automatic legal answer: what any given product group must actually carry is set by the applicable delegated act.
Common Misconceptions
A GTIN is a number. A barcode, QR code or RFID tag is a carrier that can encode it. The same GTIN can appear in several different carriers on the same product.
A GTIN carries no destination and no content. GS1 Digital Link places the key inside a web address; the passport is the published information reached through resolution, which is a separate thing again.
It identifies a trade item type. Every unit of that item shares the key. Individual identity requires the GTIN plus a serial number, and production-run identity requires the GTIN plus a batch or lot number.
Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 requires a unique product identifier and a data carrier, and leaves the specifics to delegated acts. It does not, in itself, mandate GS1 keys for all products.
