Product Data
Definition
The complete set of structured information describing a product: its identifiers, commercial and technical attributes, material composition, documentation, certification references and lifecycle records, held across the systems that create and consume it.
Expanded Explanation
In most organisations product data is distributed rather than centralised. Commercial attributes sit in a product information system, engineering data in a lifecycle management system, batch records in manufacturing systems, and compliance evidence in shared drives and supplier correspondence. Each holds a partial view, and the same attribute frequently exists in several places with different values.
Passport publication forces this to be resolved, because a passport must present one answer per field. That requires deciding, for each attribute, which system is authoritative, how conflicts are handled, who may change the value and how changes are recorded.
It also raises the standard of the data itself. Externally readable data must be complete, current, consistent between fields, and structured to a defined schema rather than expressed as free text that only internal staff can interpret.
Why It Matters
Passport programmes rarely fail on the publication layer. They fail because required fields do not exist in any system, exist with conflicting values, or exist only as documents. Establishing ownership of each field early converts a compliance deadline into a tractable data project.
Common Misconceptions
Product information systems are built for commerce, so they carry descriptions, imagery and pricing. Substance, batch and conformity data usually live elsewhere and are rarely modelled at the granularity a passport needs.
